ARDUINO KIT + SENSORS 

Arduino software & hardware is essential for this project. Also piezo electric sensors are needed to allow for the different sounds to be made.  

PLYWOOD & HARDWARE TOOLS

Plywood is a strong study material for our particular instrument as it allows for a safe place to store the Arduino software but it is not thick enough for the sensors to be hindered.

The tools needed are for assembling the instrument itself.

ABLETON LIVE

Ableton Live is a software music sequencer and digital audio workstation for macOS and Windows.

FINISHES FOR INSTRUMENT

To give the drum a finishing touch, give it a coat of paint, varnish or whatever you .

Research For Project

EXISTING RESOURCES

Existing resources of different musical innovations played a major part in the development and implementation for our project. A device was developed in 2018 called the Oddball. This is a drum machine within a ball and everytime it bounced of a different surface a different beat was played.

 

This source and another source we found on YouTube channel called AFISHAL, an artist who has changed the way he DJ’s by replacing his decks with MIDI drum pads. The drum pads surround him and each pad plays a significant sound when he hits the pads with the drumstick. Rather than playing traditional drum patterns, AFISHAL does a complete DJ set using the pads with house music sounds. On top of that, each time a pad is hit an LED light is triggered creating a light show as he speeds up his rhythm. This is what gave us inspiration for using a MIDI drum pad for our own project.

 

Upon more research, another YouTuber called SunFounder Maker Education was able to create his own laptop drum set using cans of coke and implementing Arduino technology.

EVOLUTION OF DRUM

Our project is based around a percussion based instrument so the history and evolution of drums is one of the first parts of research we began to undertake. Originally our whole thought process in relation to the project was to make a new and innovative drum but as time went on, we thought, why only limit our instrument to a drum and not a range of instruments and sounds. The evolution of the drum has gone through many stages since first developed. The first big technological advance to the drum from the traditional type of drum was the first electric drum set, which was made in 1973. Since the 1990’s, drums have been an integral part of musical bands, with more electronic bands using computer generated drum sets. Apps have also been created that allows people to play the drum on their mobile devices. An example would be ‘Virtual Drum App’ found on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. However the evolution from traditional instrument to electric to digital goes across a variety of different instruments including wind and string instruments, not just percussion. For example, there has been electric guitars and pianos (keyboards) and there are also digital versions of each available on mobile devices too.

FUTURE MUSIC INNOVATIONS

Innovation within music is essential for the growth of the industry. The constant growth of technology has allowed music to develop as a whole. Technologies such as streaming services and live DAW’s (Digital Audio Workstations) allow one person to produce and promote their own music instead of involving many people at a high cost. This major change has allowed music to be more accessible at a much cheaper cost. The lowered barriers to entry allow every aspect of music to be available to music enthusiasts and ‘bedroom artists’ which makes music more widespread and popular than it already was. An article titled ‘How Will We Make Music in 200 Years?’ was of interest for the project. Within the article, there was an interview with DJ Jeff Mills. He believes ‘people in 2214 will experience music through a full-body “liquid suit” they apply like sun-tan lotion. This coating, called the Clone 101 Reality Player, would contain thousands of microscopic sensors that enable the wearer to feel the vibrations of the music’. As our project is about musical innovation, it was interesting to read the opinions of a famous DJ to see where he believes music innovation will take us over the next two centuries.

EFFECTS MUSIC HAS ON PEOPLE

As the project involves music and people’s experience, the effects music has on a person was something that had to be addressed. The four main effects music has on a person are ‘emotion’, ‘memory’, ‘learning & neuroplasticity’ and lastly ‘attention’. The assurance that all four effects will happen during the experience of using the instrument is something that will be greatly considered. The user will generate ‘emotion’ when playing the instrument whether it’s positive or negative. For ‘memory’, the user will store the information learned throughout the experience. For ‘learning and neuroplasticity’, the user will potentially learn something new, either about innovation in relation to this unique instrument or learn how to actually play the instrument. The user could also learn about Arduino and its software which will be used to bridge the connection between the instrument and the PC. Finally, for ‘attention’, the user will experience something new and innovative that will require a certain amount of attention to navigate.
